King tides arrive: How experts and Bay Area residents are taking part in research
4+ week, 10+ hour ago (321+ words) The ocean takes center stage during the king tides, predicted to arrive in Santa Cruz Wednesday through Friday, and then again Dec. 4-6 and Jan. 1-3. Tides are familiar to anyone who spends time by the sea. Simply put, "Tides are bulges of water that the Earth rotates under," says Serena B. Lee, a physical oceanographer at California Polytechnic State University. King tides are the extreme version, occurring only a few times a year when the sun, moon and earth align, intensifying gravitational pull and driving water higher than usual. For researchers like Lee, these events are golden opportunities. Although tides are predictable, they remain under-monitored along much of the California coast, including Santa Cruz. Lee and her team are developing low-cost tidal gauges to track water levels in these gaps, especially during king tides, when extreme highs mirror the levels scientists expect…...

2+ week, 16+ hour ago (540+ words) SAN JOSE " Amazon is pushing ahead with a big new San Jose distribution hub where the tech titan is poised to employ several hundred workers to handle the late stages of package deliveries. The tech titan will build its distribution complex at 1605 South Seventh St. in San Jose, documents on file with city planners show. The proposed development site is a short distance from the city's downtown. This proposal has emerged about five years after Amazon bought an industrial site at the corner of South Seventh Street and East Alma Avenue, where the e-commerce giant intends to develop the distribution hub. In 2020, the tech titan paid $59.3 million for the 17.8-acre site, documents on file with the Santa Clara County Recorder's Office show. Seattle-based Amazon expects to hire 600 people to work at the site. However, the maximum number of employees at…...
PG&E says data center projects may appear in San Jose area by 2026
1+ week, 6+ day ago (627+ words) SAN JOSE " The first power projects in PG&E's pipeline to serve data centers could appear on the grid as soon as next year, despite some hints of softening demand, as the utility titan races to meet the tech industry's hunger for the data hubs. PG&E is in the final engineering stages for electricity projects that would produce a combined 1.6 gigawatts of energy to serve data centers in the South Bay, said Mike Medeiros, PG&E vice president of strategic commercial solutions, during a meeting hosted by the San Jose Chamber of Commerce this week. Oakland-based PG&E is scouting for opportunities to connect data centers to electricity supplies because large energy users can take on a greater share of the fixed costs of operating and maintaining the electric grid. "We see these projects as a great opportunity," Medeiros…...

San Jose plans to enter negotiations with Prologis, the world's largest developer and owner of logistics real estate, to develop the 159 acres of economic lands bounded by Los Esteros Energy Center to the east, Artesian Slough to the west, Highway 237 to the south, and the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center to the north. Prologis' proposal " dubbed the Sustainable Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing (STEM) Park " includes four 99MW data centers, totaling 1.68 million square feet and four buildings for advanced manufacturing. While the city received several proposals from credible firms, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said Prologis' vision…...
New study: Moss Landing battery fire dumped 55,000 pounds of toxic metals into wildlife-rich marshes
4+ hour, 34+ min ago (798+ words) A major fire in January at one of the world's largest battery storage plants in Moss Landing showered 55,000 pounds of toxic metals across the landscape within a mile of the plant, a new scientific study has found. "It was like a dust," said Ivano Aiello, a marine geology professor at Moss Landing Marine Labs who led the soils testing. "That's what it was. A metal dust. It was like sugar dusting on a cake." "Metals came from the fire," Aiello said. "There's no doubt about that. They traveled. They are tiny. The smoke can travel really far. They can go everywhere, including your lungs. People who were breathing that air were breathing the air with metals." The dramatic fire at the 750-megawatt battery plant began on Jan. 16 and burned for two days. It caused the evacuation of 1,200 local residents and…...
